From a high school dropout to a doctor – I’ve got one hell of a story
What makes me different? I’m human, and I’ve lived through so many crappy moments that I relate to my clients, especially the gifted ones. Here’s a bit of background.
I was a turd of a teen, a rebel without a clue at school. It was easier to add up my days of absence rather than my attendance. By the end of year 10 I’d pissed everyone off, so I said, ‘screw education’ and I moved out of home.
And work was no better. Employers didn’t know what to do with me, so I was moved from one department to the next. Screw that too. Starting a family became my new priority. But it was far from constant rainbows and butterflies.
It turns out I have gifted children, one ‘profoundly’ gifted and in the top 2%. Wondering how the hell I’d produced kids like this, I caved and got tested too. Talk about being floored to find out you’re gifted. My whole teen life finally made sense – I was being a turd and acting out because I was bored.
It wasn’t until I was 30 that my psychologist told me that I was destined to join his profession. So, I did.
But I had an ulterior motive…To research the world of gifted individuals. Knowing how little help there was for myself and my girls, I want to be the person gifted kids and adults can turn to for help and support.
I continue to research, ask questions and study to satisfy my curiosity about what it means to be gifted. I love sharing my knowledge at conferences, seminars and schools.
Blending scientific data with stories, here are some of my most-requested topics.
Speaker topics:
- Gifted 101 – Beyond the bell curve
- Living on the right side of the curve: The psychological well-being of parents with gifted children (1-hour presentation)
- Self-care and tree guards. My self-care journey started several years ago when I finally learnt that it was okay to put myself first at times. But unfortunately, this doesn’t always work and can be a real struggle. I’m passionate about teaching others how to make small changes that will motivate you to change your lifestyle and live a healthier life.
I can tailor any presentation in relation to topic and length to suit your audience.
